Broad Channel· Queens1–3 hoursnps

Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, part of Gateway National Recreation Area, is a 9,155-acre urban wildlife refuge comprising salt marshes, open bays, freshwater and brackish ponds, and upland fields within sight of the New York City skyline, providing critical habitat for over 330 species of migratory and resident birds. It is one of the most significant shorebird and waterbird sites in the northeastern United States.

Permanent Collection

The refuge's 'collection' is its living ecosystem — salt marshes, grasslands, freshwater ponds, and bay waters that support extraordinary biodiversity in an urban setting. The visitor center presents natural history exhibits on the refuge's habitats and the migratory birds that pass through each season.
