Gateway NRA — Floyd Bennett Field
Floyd Bennett Field was New York City's first municipal airport, opened in 1931, and was the departure point for many historic transatlantic and transcontinental flights before becoming a Naval Air Station during World War II. Now part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, the field preserves hangars, runways, and historic aircraft while hosting recreation, camping, and environmental education.
Permanent Collection
The site preserves historic Art Deco hangars, a control tower, and administration buildings from the 1930s, along with a collection of historic aircraft and exhibits on the field's aviation history and wartime use. The surrounding natural areas support grassland habitat rare in New York City.
